Industry-standard marine engineering recommendations comparing boat length overall (LOA), hull bottom deadrise, and standard 304/316 stainless steel trim tab dimensions:
| Boat Length (LOA) | Flat / Skiff (0°–12°) | Modified-V (14°–19°) | Deep-V (20°–24°) | High-Speed (>45 MPH) | Actuator Configuration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 – 19 Feet | 9" Span × 9" Chord | 9" Span × 12" Chord | 12" Span × 9" Chord | 12" Span × 9" Chord | Single Standard Electric (5/16" Stroke) |
| 20 – 25 Feet | 12" Span × 9" Chord | 12" Span × 12" Chord | 18" Span × 9" Chord | 18" Span × 9" Chord | Single Standard Electric Actuator |
| 26 – 30 Feet | 18" Span × 9" Chord | 18" Span × 12" Chord | 24" Span × 9" or 12" | 24" Span × 9" Fast | Single High-Performance Electric |
| 31 – 36 Feet | 24" Span × 9" Chord | 24" Span × 12" Chord | 30" Span × 12" Chord | 30" Span × 9" Chord | Dual Actuators per Tab (Heavy Duty) |
| 37 – 44 Feet | 30" Span × 12" Chord | 36" Span × 12" Chord | 36" Span × 14" Chord | 36" Span × 12" Custom | Dual Heavy-Duty Actuators per Tab |
Deep-V hulls with 20° to 24° of deadrise knife through heavy offshore chop smoothly, but they possess far less dynamic hydrodynamic water lift at lower speeds than flat-bottom hulls. As a result, deep-V boats require higher throttle to stay on plane and are hypersensitive to passenger weight shifts and crosswinds (list). Installing trim tabs with 15% to 20% more surface area forces the stern up smoothly, allowing the boat to stay on plane at significantly lower, fuel-efficient cruising speeds without porpoising.
Trim tab lift increases with the square of boat velocity, but parasitic water drag also increases exponentially. A long 12-inch or 14-inch chord produces tremendous drag at speeds above 45 MPH, which can cause erratic "bow-steering" (where the sharp bow entry digs in and causes dangerous uncommanded swerves). Using a shorter 9-inch chord combined with a wider span provides exact roll control and planing lift with a fraction of the high-speed drag penalty.
Standard trim tabs mount the upper actuator bracket approximately 10 to 12 inches directly above the hinge on the flat transom. On boats with low swim platforms, molded euro-transoms, or low splash wells, there is often not enough vertical fiberglass height to bolt the top bracket. Edge Mount trim tabs position the lower actuator bracket right at the trailing edge of the tab blade, dropping the required transom vertical mounting clearance by nearly 3 to 4 inches.
